One of Hawaii's most accomplished brewer's has begun anew, bringing you Fresh Island Mexican Food & World Class Handcrafted Beer... Enjoy the new Bamboo Beer Garden at Hawaii's Highest Brewery, 2,764' above the sea, in Waimea.

Our favorite things in life though not necessarily in order- Great FOOD deserves Great BEER which deserves Great PEOPLE who deserve Great MUSIC. Our intention at The Big Island Brewhaus is to provide all of these in our Public Haus. Our food begins with rich traditions from New Mexico and beyond tying together all-natural southwestern flavors with natural foods from the Big Island of Hawai'i- most of our produce is grown organic and made locally; including but not limited to our fresh greens, tomatoes, avocados, limes, beef, fish, tortillas and sodas. Keeping it Small on the Big Island is one way to help sustain our beautiful world!  Our small 10 barrel brewhaus is kicking out some great award winning beers.  Tom, Daniel, and Kaiao are having lotsa fun doing what they do best -- brewing world class beers one batch at a time- A virtual World of Beer- that begs to be paired with our robust and spicy Mexican Cuisine- turning an ordinary lunch into an extraordinary experience. Live Beer, Live Food, & Live Music- We all deserve great Music and this Island is loaded with it! We support local musicians with an Open Mic Night every Thursday and every other Tuesday is original Music night.  You never know who's gonna show up but it's always entertaining- and Fridays we also feature live music from the dinner hour on to enhance everyone's weekend. About Thomas Kerns

Thomas Kerns began home-brewing for fun in 1988. Fun became fiery passion evolving into a career by 1992. He broke into Oregon's early micro-brewing scene with McMenamins Breweries, working and learning the trade in many of their various brewpubs between 1992-1995.
Tom was recruited by Forest Brewing Co. in Manila, Philippines in 1996 where he designed, engineered, installed, opened and operated the brewery for one year. The brewery-restaurant did well there - creating a new awareness and appreciation of fine locally handcrafted beer.
In 1997 he came to Maui to open Fish & Game Brewing Company. Here Tom developed a large following who appreciated his robust & smooth brewery creations. New ownership in 2005 brought more exposure, success, and accolades as newly renamed Maui Brewing Company won two Silver medals at the prestigious 2005 Great American Beer Festival; then Gold and Bronze Awards at the international 2006 World Beer Cup; followed by two Gold, a Silver and Bronze Medals at the 2007 North American Beer Awards; then a Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2007. Most recently in April of 2008 he won two Silvers and a Bronze Award at the prestigious 2008 World Beer Cup and a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival.
In Feb. 2007 Maui Brewing Co. opened a larger production brewery in Lahaina, featuring a canning line which has begun to satisfy the demand for handcrafted beer on the island of Maui, in the state of Hawai'i, and beyond. Maui Brewing Company's new facility brews and cans three of their most popular local crafted beers - Bikini Blonde Lager, Big Swell IPA, and 2006 & 2008 World Beer Cup Gold & Silver Medal winner, Coconut Porter.
Tom believes that the heart of a community, and the creative culture of a brewpub, are essential to a brewpub's core attraction. His desire to continue enhancing brewing traditions from around the world with creative, robust yet balanced, quench-worthy beers of many different styles and origins - both new and old - drives him on. His approach continues to create new levels of appreciation in those who taste his creations. We believe handcrafted beer is local liquid art.
Tom followed his calling to the Big Island of Hawai'i... he and his wife Jayne dreamt of a brewpub in the upcountry town of Waimea. The project began with the purchase of Tako Taco Taqueria, a successful Mexican restaurant in the heart of Waimea. Operating the restaurant since August 16, 2008 the brewery was added in early 2011.  The grand opening for our own beer was March 4th 2011.  Since then we have Marched Forth! Within 6 months the Overboard IPA won a Gold Medal at the US Open Beer Championships with Silvers going to the White Mountain Porter and the Red Giant in the same competition.  One can find up to 15 distinct Brewhaus beers at any one time.  Ales, Lagers, Belgian-Styles, traditional and outside the box --  New creations brewing all the time; come check it out!
